Organic Shichimi Togarashi Seasoning
What is Shichimi?
Shichimi, or shichi, 七 (seven) mi, 味(flavours) is also known by some as ‘Japanese seven spice’. It is a blend of seeds, condiments and spice. We believe Clearspring Shichimi is one of, if not the only organic Shichimi available in the UK.
How is Shichimi made?
Our Organic Shichimi is made using the finest quality organic ingredients. It contains both black sesame and whole sesame seeds, which have both been toasted to bring out their natural flavour. The sesame seeds are then mixed with a perfectly balanced blend of ingredients including chilli flakes, black pepper, ginger powder, orange peel and nori (sea vegetable). The powerful heat from the chilli is beautifully complemented by refreshing citrus notes and the complex umami rich flavours of sesame and nori. It is made in the UK in small batches to ensure that the taste and quality is perfect every time.

History of Shichimi
It is believed that Shichimi was created by a spice merchant named Tokuemon in 1625, who ran a herbal shop on the banks of the Yagenbori Canal in the Ryogoku district of Edo. Red chilli (capsicum) is believed to have been brought to Japan by the Portuguese in the mid to late 16th century. Having discovered the unique flavour of chilli, Tokuemon is said to have put together a blend of 7 ingredients which he believed were healthy as well as delicious and called it shichimi-togarashi (seven-flavored capsicum). The seven-spice blend can vary slightly depending on the region or producer, but the core ingredients remain the same and are a defining flavour of authentic Shichimi.
